چکیده

The purpose of this paper is to investigate properties of subsemigroups of finitely presented semigroups, particularly with respect to the property of being finitely presented. More precisely, we will consider various instances of the following: Main Problem. Let S be a finitely presented semigroup. Ž . Ž . i Is every subsemigroup ideal, one-sided ideal of S finitely generated? Ž . Ž . ii Is every subsemigroup ideal, one-sided ideal of S which is finitely generated as a semigroup finitely presented? Ž . Ž . iii Is every subsemigroup ideal, one-sided ideal of finite index in S Ž . finitely presented? For the definition of index see below. For example, if S is finite all these questions have an affirmative answer. Ž . Less trivially, if S is a commutative semigroup then ii has an affirmative w x w x answer; see 12 . Also, in 2 it has been proved that a two-sided ideal of finite index in a finitely presented semigroup is always finitely presented.

Automatic structures for subsemigroups of Baumslag–Solitar semigroups

This paper studies automatic structures for subsemigroups of Baumslag–Solitar semigroups (that is, semigroups presented by ⟨x, y | (yx, xy)⟩ where m,n ∈ N). A geometric argument (a rarity in the field of automatic semigroups) is used to show that if m > n, all of the finitely generated subsemigroups of this semigroup are [right-] automatic. If m < n, all of its finitely generated subsemigroups ...

Finite Presentability of HNN Extensions of Inverse Semigroups

HNN extensions of inverse semigroups, where the associated inverse subsemigroups are order ideals of the base, are defined by means of a construction based upon the isomorphism between the categories of inverse semigroups and inductive groupoids. The resulting HNN extension may conveniently be described by an inverse semigroup presentation, and we determine when an HNN extension with finitely g...

Hopfian and co-hopfian subsemigroups and extensions

This paper investigates the preservation of hopficity and co-hopficity on passing to finite-index subsemigroups and extensions. It was already known that hopficity is not preserved on passing to finite Rees index subsemigroups, even in the finitely generated case. We give a stronger example to show that it is not preserved even in the finitely presented case. It was also known that hopficity is...

Presentations for Subsemigroups of Groups

This thesis studies subsemigroups of groups from three perspectives: automatic structures, ordinary semigroup presentations, and Malcev presentaions. [A Malcev presentation is a presentation of a special type for a semigroup that can be embedded into a group. A group-embeddable semigroup is Malcev coherent if all of its finitely generated subsemigroups admit finite Malcev presentations.] The th...

Markov semigroups, monoids, and groups

A group is Markov if it admits a prefix-closed regular language of unique representatives with respect to some generating set, and strongly Markov if it admits such a language of unique minimal-length representatives over every generating set. This paper considers the natural generalizations of these concepts to semigroups and monoids. Two distinct potential generalizations to monoids are shown...
